Is Zuddas' Grotto

Along the Southern coast of Sardinia, near the village of Santadi are the Is Zuddas caves, one of the most magnificent underground sceneries on the island. Monte Meana, under which the cave system has developed, is composed of dolomitic rocks dating back about 530 million years.

The cave which is still forming, is made up of several "rooms" each of which is distinguished by the peculiarity of the concretions: stalactites, stalagmites, lava, cannulae and the very special aragonite, the real stars of the Is Zuddas Caves.

In fact they “grow” in two different ways, the acicular aragonite; large clumps of needle-like crystals and the spectacular eccentric aragonite (whose high concentration in one room makes it one of the unique caves in the world); threadlike formations that develop in all directions, ignoring the laws of gravity, taking on the most bizarre forms .

In the grand Organ Hall every year for Christmas a large Nativity scene is enacted, not to be missed!
